Dr Edward Zigler Quote & Excerpt

"Reading is just one aspect of cognitive development and cognitive development is just one aspect of human development. A child's curiosity and belief that he or she can succeed are just an important to reading as knowing the alphabe"t.

When I am talking about "It Takes A Village" I'm obviously not talking just about or even primarily about geographical villages any longer, but about the network relationships.

Ms. Taylor:  3rd Grade Teacher
I remember forgetting to do my homework and Ms. Taylor my 3rd grade teacher called me to the front of the class and told me to hold my hand out. She reached in her desk and pulled out a ruler and wacked me one time across the hand in  front of the class. I remember crying not because it hurt so much but because I was so hurt that I had not done my home work and the whole class was looking at me.
After class Ms. Taylor asked me if I would like to go home with her and she would help me with my homework. I asked my mom and she agreed to letting me go. Each day Ms. Taylor and I would leave the school together and she became my favorite teacher. Out of all my teachers she is the only teacher I can really remember. I never received another wack in the hand because I always had my homework. There is not really anyone else who really nurtured me when I was a child. My parents were only children so I never had an aunt, uncle or first cousin to play with. My mother's mother passed when she was 8 years old and her father passed when I was 5 years old so I do not know what it feels like to have grandparents to hold and love you. My mother was only 18 when she had me and she had never received the love of a mother so she did not know how to love me.My father although in the home never accepted me as his child so I never had support or grandparents on his side. It's amazing how I have come this far believing in myself when I had no one to encourage me to ever succeed.

For the love Patrick

16 years ago I had the opportunity to become a foster parent for a one pound baby boy. His mom was 14 years old and a drug user. Social Service placed Patrick in our care until they were able to locate some one who could care for Patrick. I remember the day that I brought Patrick to our home.  He was so small and frail but yet so strong. Patrick stayed in our home for 6 months until a relative came and adopted him. The love that we had for Patrick was a love that ran deeper than foster care. Patrick was our baby and we loved him and to loose him was a great loss. I am so greateful that he was part of our life if only for a short time.
