Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: Internationally

UNICEF

Consultancy Assignment: Early Childhood Development in Emergencies

UNICEF is seeking is passionate and committed professional who wants to make a lasting difference for children. Immediately this employment sounded like me because for the past 30 years I have worked towards making a difference in the lives of children. I have even given much thought about possible volunteering and working in another country.

This particular employment is to help children who have become separated from their parents or primary care givers during a crisis or natural disaster. This Early Childhood Development (ECD) program would assist families who are torn apart by giving children a sense of comfort and stability by meeting their physical, social, and emotional needs.

During 1999 our town was hit with Hurricane Floyd. It was during this flood that I first experienced working with children who had become separated from family members due to this natural disaster. Our community schools were forced shut down for almost 30 days. There were several homes and business that were destroyed. In an effort to give the children in the community something to do I started a make-shift school which operated Monday – Friday from 9:00 – 5:00 giving the children a place to come learn, three meals a day, clothing, personal needs, and extra food to take home.

Qualification:

• Advanced University degree in Social Sciences, Child Development, Education or any other related field.
• At least 8-10 years of solid professional experience in the areas of ECD, Emergencies and/or related fields.
• Experience with peace building and conflict resolution efforts globally is highly desirable
• Previous experience working with UNICEF and knowledge of UNICEF’s policies and procedures is desirable.
• Excellent writing skills in the English language. Knowledge of another UN language is an added advantage.

Although I am not experience in working with UNICEF I would be interested in training to become qualified. I have taken French in the past but would need to take additional classes. I am willing to travel and this position is one that interests me.
